December 2010 Archives

December 1, 2010

AP Lang

We discussed symbols, characters, style, setting, and theme in chapters 10-14 of The Scarlet Letter. Read through chapter 20 for Friday.
In the meantime, remember to bring your RED book to class tomorrow for our conversation about Emerson. (No hall passes for absent-minded scholars!)
Keep your unit schedule ever in mind: seminar on SL next Wednesday; timed writing on SL next Thursday; test on SL next Friday.

9th Grade Lit / Comp

The rough draft of your essay on one symbol or theme from Fahrenheit 451 is due ON FRIDAY. We won't have any more class time to work on this draft before then, so anything you have not finished will have to be done as homework.
Remember: Your test on the novel will be NEXT Tuesday - December 7.

If you missed class, read the excerpts from "Nature" and "Self-Reliance" (pp 388-392) and "Concord Hymn" (p 393). Expect to see some version of questions 1, 2, and 3 (p 397) on your unit test.
Before class tomorrow, read chapters 15-20 of The Scarlet Letter (not the on-line summary of such chapters, but the actual chapters themselves). You'll need to finish the book by Monday, so go ahead and read as much as you can, time permitting. You will need your copy of the novel in class tomorrow.

Rough drafts due tomorrow! Questions? E-mail Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org.

Remember that you need your red book tomorrow. We'll use a hard copy of the Thoreau essay so you can annotate as we read, but the text isn't easy to read, and it will help to have the book as well. Reminder: seminar - Wednesday, timed writing - Thursday, and test - Friday---all on The Scarlet Letter.
Real AP Lang students come to Avalon Coffee House on Tuesday evening.

Essays and tests should all be returned tomorrow, so you will have a better idea of what your grade is as we head into the last week of classes and two more major assignments: the final draft of your literary analysis of Fahrenheit 451 (due next Monday, Dec. 13) and your final exam. If you have any make-up work to do or extra-credit work to turn in, it MUST be completed and submitted by this Friday, Dec. 10.

Big finish for The Scarlet Letter over the next three days: seminar tomorrow (Bring your completed prep sheet!), timed writing on Thursday, and multiple-choice test on Friday. The only book you'll need for the rest of the week is The Scarlet Letter.

If you missed today's test on The Scarlet Letter, see Mrs. McCord to make it up. You also need to bring the annotated poems of Emily Dickinson to class on Monday. Didn't get them? Forgot to take them home? No worries: Download file

The final writing project---all components!---is due on Monday. Be sure to have your original rubric, your outline, and your rough draft to attach to your final, typed draft.
If you have to be absent on Monday, email your final draft to Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org.
Your final exam will be Friday, Dec. 17 (8th period) or Monday, Dec. 20 (3rd period), so you need to be in class every day for review!

NO SCHOOL ON THURSDAY means that 8th period will have your final Friday morning with no more opportunity for review or questions. E-mail Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org if you have any questions.
Your final has 4 sections: 30% - questions on a new short story; 30% - questions on a new essay; 30% questions on Fahrenheit 451; and 10% on grammar.

NO SCHOOL ON THURSDAY means no portfolio check or grade review. On Friday you'll complete a timed writing and then during your final exam period next week, you'll complete a multiple choice section and another timed writing---yes, just one.
Questions? Email Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org.

All final drafts of essays have been graded and returned. Students who are disappointed in your grade may need to revisit the directions you received before the Thanksgiving holiday::

Your essay will be worth 100 points.
Your final draft should be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
This essay should be at least 4-5 paragraphs long - introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs in CDW format.
You should staple your rubric and all of your process to your final draft. You will lose points if you are missing any of your process.
FINAL DRAFT DUE DATE: MONDAY, DECEMBER 13
Late papers will be accepted; you will lose 10 points per day.
Students who are absent are expected to submit their papers electronically.
No papers will be accepted after December 17.

One timed writing down, one to go.
On Monday or Wednesday, whichever day your class has its final, you'll see another timed writing topic and four new selections with 10 or 12 multiple choice questions apiece. All together, these three scores (today's timed writing + the new timed writing + your multiple choice score) will be adjusted to represent an AP score of 1-5. Then the AP score will be translated into a grade equivalent.
There really is no way to study for the final: you've been practicing for it, however, since about the third grade.
Your recent test grades (Scarlet Letter and Romanticism / Transcendentalism) should be visible to you through HAC. If you have a question about those scores, e-mail me or come by Monday to see your tests.
