December 17, 2010All final drafts of essays have been graded and returned. Students who are disappointed in your grade may need to revisit the directions you received before the Thanksgiving holiday::
Your essay will be worth 100 points.
Your final draft should be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
This essay should be at least 4-5 paragraphs long - introduction, conclusion, and body paragraphs in CDW format.
You should staple your rubric and all of your process to your final draft. You will lose points if you are missing any of your process.
FINAL DRAFT DUE DATE: MONDAY, DECEMBER 13
Late papers will be accepted; you will lose 10 points per day.
Students who are absent are expected to submit their papers electronically.
No papers will be accepted after December 17.
NO SCHOOL ON THURSDAY means that 8th period will have your final Friday morning with no more opportunity for review or questions. E-mail Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org if you have any questions.
Your final has 4 sections: 30% - questions on a new short story; 30% - questions on a new essay; 30% questions on Fahrenheit 451; and 10% on grammar.
The final writing project---all components!---is due on Monday. Be sure to have your original rubric, your outline, and your rough draft to attach to your final, typed draft.
If you have to be absent on Monday, email your final draft to Mrs. McCord at mccordl1@fultonschools.org.
Your final exam will be Friday, Dec. 17 (8th period) or Monday, Dec. 20 (3rd period), so you need to be in class every day for review!
Tests and rough drafts have been returned. Up-to-date grade sheets either went home today or will go home tomorrow. Tomorrow we will watch video segment 2 of Fahrenheit 451.
Final drafts of literary analysis essays are due on Monday.
Essays and tests should all be returned tomorrow, so you will have a better idea of what your grade is as we head into the last week of classes and two more major assignments: the final draft of your literary analysis of Fahrenheit 451 (due next Monday, Dec. 13) and your final exam. If you have any make-up work to do or extra-credit work to turn in, it MUST be completed and submitted by this Friday, Dec. 10.

December 1, 2010The rough draft of your essay on one symbol or theme from Fahrenheit 451 is due ON FRIDAY. We won't have any more class time to work on this draft before then, so anything you have not finished will have to be done as homework.
Remember: Your test on the novel will be NEXT Tuesday - December 7.
Two big assignments are coming up quickly:
1. On Friday, the first draft of your essay on Fahrenheit 451 is due. It should be typed, if possible. (The final draft, due December 13, MUST be typed.) We worked on this paper today in class. You will get back the work you have done so far and we'll continue to write these essays tomorrow in class.
2. Your test on Fahrenheit 451 will be next Tuesday (Dec. 7). We'll discuss the book and review for the test on Friday and Monday, so try to be in class.

1, Where did Bradbury write most of F451?
2. Why couldn't he write at home?
3. About how many words are in the final version of the novel?
4. What are the "great granary silos where [writers'] wits are stored"?
5. What prompted Bradbury to call all his characters "from F 451 out of the shadows"?
6. Summarize Bradbury's imaginary conversation between Beatty and Montag.
7. How did Bradbury change Clarisse's fate in the stage version of F451?
8. What is the tone of the last sentence?
Tomorrow, we will begin turning your outlines into first drafts of your essays. Be sure to have your outline (if you took it out of your folder or haven't turned it in yet), your rubric, paper, and a pen with you!

October 29, 2010Quiz Monday on "The Hearth and the Salamander," Part 1 of Fahrenheit 451.
There will be a review session Monday morning, G-59, from 8-8:30. Come by if you have time.
Today's QuickWrite asked you to explain what Montag reveals about himself when he uses the phrase "Once upon a time." (Third period, you'll find this reference on page 34; Eighth period, you'll find it on page 38.)
In class we discussed the significance of Clarisse's family and her relationships with people her own age, Mildred's leisure time activities, and Montag's fear of the Mechanical Hound. Then we read the section assigned for tonight: 3rd - pages 35-48; 8th - pages 39-52).

If you have missed class Thursday or Friday and don't have your book at home, you can go to this web site, http://www.classicreader.com/book/1317/1/, and read "The Most Dangerous Game," the story we have been reading in class. We are about halfway through the story.
As you read, look for incidents and images that might be examples of foreshadowing.

THIRD PERIOD: If your last name begins with a letter that falls from P-Z in the alphabet, check with Mrs. McCord about attending the freshman class meeting without losing testing time on Tuesday.

In class we read the news article "Caucasian Mummies Mystify Chinese," and took some notes about news stories and six specific vocabulary words from the article. Classwork included writing the answers to the questions at the end of the story (1-7 on page 136 and 1-7 on page 137). You need not copy the questions, but please answer in complete sentences.
